Kuo also revealed that MediaTek axed 30% ~ 35% of chip shipment for mid and low-end products. Orders for flagship chip Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 also saw decline of around 10% ~ 15% in orders.

MediaTek and Qualcomm did not respond to the request for comments from China Business Journal.

“It takes longer time for smartphone users to buy new smartphones because of the impact from the pandemic and the lack of appeal of 5G phones,” an analyst from CINNO Research said, commenting that there are many reasons why the development of the Chinese smartphone market has been disrupted.

Several market research firms’ data confirm users’ low desire to purchase a new smartphone. A report from Counterpoint shows that smartphone users in China on average buy a new smartphone every 31 months now while statistics from Strategy Analytics show the figure is 28 months. In comparison, in 2019 smartphone users on average buy a new smartphone every 16 ~ 18 months.
