BEIJING, June 7 (TMTPOST) — The shipment volume of smartphones in China went down by 29.2% year-on-year to 69.346 million units in Q1 2022, according to statistics from market research firm Canalys.

Statistics from Canalys show that in Q1 the global smartphone shipment was 311.2 million units, registering year-on-year decline of 11%. Xiaomi, OPPO and vivo, which were the top three Chinese brands in terms of sales volume, all suffered a year-on-year decline of around 20% in shipment.

Information from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology shows that in Q1 the smartphone shipment volume in the Chinese market was 69.346 million units, down 29.2% year-on-year.

Ming-Chi Kuo, analyst from Tianfeng Securities said that the Android smartphone market in China has been declining. In 2022, 270 million orders of Android smartphones have been axed. In March, around 170 million smartphone orders were cancelled.

Kuo also revealed that MediaTek axed 30% ~ 35% of chip shipment for mid and low-end products. Orders for flagship chip Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 also saw decline of around 10% ~ 15% in orders.

MediaTek and Qualcomm did not respond to the request for comments from China Business Journal.

“It takes longer time for smartphone users to buy new smartphones because of the impact from the pandemic and the lack of appeal of 5G phones,” an analyst from CINNO Research said, commenting that there are many reasons why the development of the Chinese smartphone market has been disrupted.

Several market research firms’ data confirm users’ low desire to purchase a new smartphone. A report from Counterpoint shows that smartphone users in China on average buy a new smartphone every 31 months now while statistics from Strategy Analytics show the figure is 28 months. In comparison, in 2019 smartphone users on average buy a new smartphone every 16 ~ 18 months.
