BEIJING, June 18 (TMTPOST)— Apple gained market share in China in May amid sales decline of the overall smartphone market in the country, JP Morgan analyst Samik Chatterjee estimated in his note based on recent shipment data from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT).
According to CAICT, smartphone shipment in China last month fell to 2260.4 million handsets, with a year-on-year decrease of 30.8%. Chatterjee noted international brands including Apple delivered a total of 3.8 million phones, marking the best month for non-domestic brands in China since May 2018, and the 41% month-on-month increase of shipments was higher than average season uptick typically seen at this time of the year.
More importantly, Chatterjee wrote, “the comparison of the trends between Apple and overall volumes indicates that Apple continues to gain market share in the region, with average share now closer to the teens relative to low-double digits a year ago”. Most original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) acknowledge that the smartphone market in China has slowed down broadly, except for in the case of Apple, he added.
