China’s Double 11 Becomes a Contest of Attention, Not Only Discounts

Alibaba and JD.com staged rival kickoff events on the same afternoon as Douyin launched its own festival. With growth harder to find, the platforms are competing on timing, brand depth, services and AI tools—while merchants weigh profit and repeat purchase over pure sales volume.

NextFin News — Alibaba and JD.com chose the same afternoon to set out their plans for this year’s Singles’ Day season. One event ran in Shanghai, the other in Beijing. Douyin started its shopping festival the same day. The calendar collision was not a formal duel. In a market where new users are scarce, it was a fight for the same pool of attention, merchant budgets and consumer spending.

The platforms are no longer running identical races. Tmall’s pre-sale window opens this evening, with the main selling period set for October 20. The company says a record number of global brands and tens of millions of product listings will take part. JD.com started earlier: its campaign was already live on October 12, and it reported double-digit growth in first-day ordering users compared with a year earlier. Different clocks, same pressure—to be heard before a rival’s message drowns out the signal to brands and shoppers.

Tmall is leaning on two pillars: artificial intelligence and flagship stores. Search, ranking and AI product leaders shared the stage with retail executives, framing the festival as a test of how well the platform reads demand and turns it into orders. Flagship storefronts remain the preferred stage for brand campaigns. Apple is deepening its presence, including a foldable model set for a festival-period debut and broader participation from recent Pro-line devices after an expansion of authorized shops. Exclusive gift sets, large waves of new items and a fresh cohort of first-time festival merchants are meant to keep the catalog feeling scarce and premium rather than merely cheap.

JD.com is pushing a different mix. It is elevating household, travel and health services, and it is treating live content—challenges, celebrity sessions, executive streams, on-site and review formats—as a primary way to hold attention as acquisition costs rise. Its AI shopping tools and related systems are described as spanning thousands of retail and logistics scenarios. The pitch is less about winning a single price comparison and more about certainty of fulfillment, breadth of services and denser content around the cart.

Industry specialists describe the shift as a move from expanding the pie to extracting more from a pie that grows slowly. Tmall is using AI and brand assets to improve matching and perceived quality. JD.com is reinforcing self-operated merchandising and logistics as a reliability moat. Neither side is framing the season as an open-ended subsidy war. Simpler discounts—item-level cuts rather than complex basket rules—feature in Tmall’s merchant guidance. JD.com is testing rebate mechanics that reward broader and more frequent baskets. Douyin is extending coupon distribution beyond its core app into sibling products across chat, short drama, news and reading, turning a content network into a shopping funnel.

For merchants the season is more complicated than a short surge of orders. Campaigns last longer, channels multiply and AI tools change how listings and creative work get produced. Advisers say the dominant internal metric has shifted from gross merchandise value toward contribution margin, repeat purchase and brand reputation. Stretching a promotion across weeks raises labor and inventory costs that smaller sellers must fold into the same return calculation.

Double 11 still concentrates spending and storytelling like no other date on the Chinese retail calendar. What it concentrates on is changing. Platforms are competing to own the narrative early, to turn software and services into reasons to choose one checkout over another, and to convince brands that the next order will not come only from the deepest discount. Merchants, for their part, are learning to treat the festival less as a volume spike and more as a test of whether the economics still work when the noise fades.
