Alibaba Launches AI Song Generator HappyShrimp, Echoing Old Xiami Brand

Alibaba has released HappyShrimp 1.0, an AI model that converts natural-language prompts into complete songs, and paired the launch with a partnership involving Taihe Music Group. The product draws on branding linked to the former Xiami streaming service, which shut down in 2021, as the company expands its consumer generative-AI offerings.

NextFin News — Alibaba has entered the generative-music market with a new AI tool that turns ordinary language into finished songs. The company released the beta version of HappyShrimp 1.0, known in Chinese as 快乐虾米, on August 17, giving users the ability to describe a mood, story or style and receive a full track in return.

The model, built by Alibaba Token Hub, generates melody, arrangement, lyrics and vocals together in a single process. No formal music training is required. Users may also supply their own lyrics or request instrumental versions. Supported styles range across Chinese-style music, pop, R&B, hip-hop, rock, funk, electronic, classical and jazz. Access opened the same day on both domestic and overseas PC web platforms, with free credits provided for early trials.

On the day of the release Alibaba announced a strategic partnership with Taihe Music Group. The collaboration is intended to explore joint work on industry ecosystem projects, the AI platform and co-creation with musicians. The tool is also scheduled to appear in connection with the Aranya Xiami Music Festival later in August, linking the new product to an existing live event that still carries the older brand identity.

The original Xiami Music streaming service stopped operating in February 2021. Alibaba had acquired the platform in 2013; for a time it was known for discovery features and support of independent artists. By the end it had lost substantial ground to larger competitors with broader catalogues. HappyShrimp reuses elements of that branding—the “shrimp” motif and festival association—yet functions as an entirely different product focused on creation rather than licensed playback.

HappyShrimp forms part of Alibaba’s expanding “Happy” series of generative applications. The same Token Hub unit has already introduced HappyHorse for video and HappyOyster for interactive three-dimensional environments. Music, with its emotional charge and ease of sharing, fits the pattern of media the company is adding as it seeks to move model capabilities into everyday consumer tools. Alibaba has reported continued growth in cloud and AI-related revenue and has set multi-year commercial targets for those businesses.

The market for AI music generation is no longer empty. Overseas services such as Suno established early demand for prompt-based song creation and surfaced practical questions of quality and rights. Inside China, several large technology groups and specialized model developers have introduced competing platforms. Some prioritize simple, one-step generation for casual users; others layer on editing tools, stem separation, continuation and remix functions that pull the AI deeper into semi-professional workflows. HappyShrimp arrives emphasizing natural-language understanding and rapid whole-song output rather than an extensive post-generation editing environment.

Company descriptions stress that the model treats a song as a coherent structure, planning long-range relationships among lyrics, melody, harmony and arrangement instead of assembling separately generated pieces. Whether this produces more consistent or more distinctive results will be settled by sustained use rather than launch statements. The Taihe relationship offers a possible route into established industry networks, while residual recognition of the older branding may help initial discovery among users familiar with the former service.

Alibaba presents the release as one step in converting generative capacity into practical creative applications. Differentiation in a field where basic generation quality is converging will depend on further feature development, the musical character of the output, and any lasting connection between creation and distribution or professional use. Those questions remain open as the beta period begins.
