Families Drive Hours for Digital Visions of Places That Do Not Exist

Parents and travelers drawn by flawless short-video images of underwater tunnels and hidden natural wonders arrive to find ordinary concrete or empty ground, exposing how cheaply perfect fantasies now travel and how slowly trust recovers.

NextFin News — Lin Mei stood with her eight-year-old son at the entrance to the coastal tunnel on a warm Saturday morning this summer, the boy still holding the small camera she had packed for the occasion. They had left home before dawn, the car quiet except for the occasional question about how many fish they might see. The short video that set the plan in motion had shown cars gliding beneath a transparent dome, schools of fish drifting overhead, coral visible through curved glass. The caption spoke of a limited summer opening and invited viewers to bring children. Local traffic was already backing up by the time they arrived. When they finally entered, the walls were solid gray concrete, the lighting harsh and yellow, the air thick with the smell of exhaust. The boy looked up, then at her. A driver in the next lane rolled down his window and said, almost kindly, that it had always been just a dark road. Lin Mei said nothing. Later she learned the video had been assembled from footage of an aquarium walkway, processed in minutes, and released into the recommendation stream.

That small disappointment has repeated itself across several coastal and inland destinations this season. Videos and still images promising transparent undersea passages, fairy-tale sinkholes reached by hidden paths, or mountain elevators with uninterrupted panoramic views have circulated widely. Some are built from existing public footage; others are generated entirely without a physical source. Families plan weekend trips, buy tickets or simply drive, and discover the gap between the screen and the place. Consumer complaint records for tourism services rose sharply during the spring holiday period, with mismatches between promoted images and actual sites accounting for a notable share of the increase. Officials in more than one city have issued quiet confirmations that certain widely shared views do not exist.

How the Images Became Easy

The progression has been steady and largely technical. Earlier versions relied on heavy filters that intensified color and contrast on real locations, turning ordinary light into something more cinematic. Later ones combined photographs with digital alterations that turned plain walls into lakes or modest shores into exotic resorts. Visitors still arrived at an actual site; the disappointment was one of degree. The current versions require no original footage at all. A prompt, a few seconds of processing, and an image or short clip appears that satisfies every compositional preference of the platforms: balanced light, empty frames, saturated hues, no stray people, no construction debris, no overcast sky. The marginal cost approaches zero. Anyone with basic tools can produce them in volume and schedule them for peak evening scrolling hours.

The economic incentive is equally clear. A single well-performing clip can draw followers, attract brand placements, or funnel viewers into private sales of group tours and local products. Because the images are engineered for algorithmic preference, they often outrank carefully shot real footage in the first hours after posting. When one creator demonstrates the method, others replicate it within days. The volume of fabricated locations multiplies. Ordinary viewers, scrolling quickly between work messages and dinner plans, have limited means to distinguish the generated from the photographed. A retired teacher who made a similar trip to a supposed mountain elevator told me she had paused the video three times to study the light on the glass. It had looked consistent. Only the empty concrete platform at the end of the road revealed the difference.

The Costs That Travel Farther

For the families who make the journey the loss is usually modest in money and larger in expectation. Many accept the mismatch with a shrug once they are already there. Formal complaints require time and documentation that few pursue for a few hundred in travel costs and a wasted morning. The creators, when contacted, often reply that the material was seasonal, composite, or taken from a different angle. Small gestures of compensation—a discount coupon, a small souvenir—close most cases. The low risk encourages repetition.

Real destinations absorb a different damage. A multi-year investment in planning, construction, and reputation can be undercut by a fabricated image that borrows the place name or a nearby geographic reference. Visitors arrive already primed for disappointment and leave reviews that attach to the genuine site. Operators of established coastal parks and mountain paths report that search rankings for official accounts sometimes lag behind the viral fabrications. One manager of a long-running scenic area described the effect as a form of quiet erosion: years of careful maintenance and guided interpretation can be overshadowed in a single afternoon by an image that never existed. A quieter secondary effect spreads among potential travelers. After one mismatched trip, many begin to scroll past any claim of a “secret” or “limited” view, including those that are accurate. Careful photographers who still travel with heavy equipment and wait for natural light share the resulting caution. Their posts, slower to produce and less perfectly composed, receive fewer early recommendations.

Attempts to Restore Weight to the Real

Regulatory measures have begun to appear. Rules requiring clear labeling of synthetic content in tourism-related posts took effect last year. In one recent case a merchant using generated video to promote nonexistent views was penalized under advertising standards. Platforms have removed batches of violating posts after public complaints. Yet the production rate of new images continues to outpace review capacity. Enforcement remains uneven, and many fabricated clips simply reappear under slight variations of title and caption.

At the same time, some cities have employed the same tools for official promotion, generating short films that heighten the appeal of existing streets, lakes, and historic districts without inventing the places themselves. Viewers respond to those pieces by expressing desire to visit the actual locations. The distinction is practical rather than technical: one set of images points toward a physical site that can receive the visitor; the other points toward nothing that exists. The difference is visible only after the journey has already been made.

Lin Mei and her son completed the tunnel crossing in silence and turned toward home. On the return drive the boy asked whether the fish had been moved for the day or whether the glass was only open at certain hours. She answered that the video had simply shown a different place. In the weeks since, she has continued to open the short-video apps in the evenings after the child is asleep. She now pauses longer on any landscape that looks too evenly lit or too perfectly empty. Sometimes she checks the comments for the first mention of concrete or an ordinary road. The tunnel itself remains exactly as it has always been—dark, functional, unremarkable. The images that once made it seem otherwise continue to appear in the feed, each one still capable of sending another family down the same road before the light changes or the algorithm moves on.
