AI Agents Point to the Future of Business Operations and Customer Interaction in China

His vision is shared by leading industry figures, including Robin Li, the founder and CEO of Chinese tech giant Baidu. In June, Li spoke about the growing potential of AI agents, noting that they would become as ubiquitous as websites in the AI era.

TMTPOST -- The evolution of the artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem is fast approaching a world where intelligent agents, or "AI agents," may outnumber humans, noted Mark Zuckerberg, the founder, chair and CEO of Meta, formerly known as Facebook.

Zuckerberg’s comments in July following the release of the LLAMA 3.1405B open-source AI model suggest that businesses will soon be expected to have their own AI agents—similar to an email address or a social media account owned by a business. He predicts that the number of these agents could reach hundreds of millions, possibly billions, creating an AI-powered revolution in customer interaction and business operations.

"I kind of think that every business in the future just like they have an Email address on a website and a social media presence today. I think every business is going to have an agent that their customers can talk to in the future that's gonna be hundreds of millions maybe billions of what kind of small business agents," Zuckerberg explained.

His vision is shared by leading industry figures, including Robin Li, the founder and CEO of Chinese tech giant Baidu. In June, Li spoke about the growing potential of AI agents, noting that they would become as ubiquitous as websites in the AI era. According to him, there will be millions, if not billions, of AI agents forming a vast ecosystem that could shape the future of AI.

Baidu’s smart agent platform, Wenxin, has seen impressive growth, with over 19,000 businesses from industries such as education, real estate, and manufacturing integrating AI agents. In just a month, the number of AI agents generating revenue has increased by 395%, and some agents have generated up to 100,000 yuan (US$ 13,823) in a single transaction.

Similarly, other companies like Alipay and Tencent have been rolling out their own AI agent ecosystems. At the 2024 Inclusion Conference on the Bund, Alipay launched an AI agent development platform, "Baibao Box," which is expected to play a major role in integrating AI into industries like healthcare, finance, and transportation. Tencent’s AI agents, under its "Yuanshuo" platform, have already reached over 100,000 agents providing services across entertainment, travel, e-commerce, and more.

ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, also released its own AI model in May, boasting over eight million agents with 26 million monthly active users. Many businesses and universities are utilizing ByteDance's platform to create AI assistants for both customer-facing applications and academic use.

These developments highlight the growing prominence of AI agents as businesses adopt them for customer service, data analysis, and automation. The adoption of AI agents is seen as a natural extension of the generative AI boom, which has brought about the rise of large-scale models like GPT and Wenxin.

As AI technology matures, companies are exploring how to use AI agents to enhance customer interaction and generate new revenue streams. Micro-business platforms like Weimob and DingTalk are already offering AI agents for tasks such as store setup, customer service, and marketing, showing the growing business potential of these tools. In fact, the launch of these tools has resulted in significant boosts to AI-driven revenue.

AI agents are now reaching beyond software, and companies like Honor and Xiaomi are integrating AI into hardware. Honor’s new MagicOS 9.0 features the YOYO AI assistant, capable of performing tasks from ordering coffee to managing app permissions. Xiaomi, too, has plans to launch a new AI-powered smart eyewear product by 2025, enhancing the trend of blending AI software with physical devices.

In the rapidly evolving AI landscape, companies of all sizes are racing to integrate these agents into their products and services. The widespread adoption of AI agents could transform not only the way businesses interact with customers but also how industries approach automation, customer service, and data management.

Industry analysts predict that by 2026, the Chinese AI market will surpass $26 billion, with intelligent agents playing a central role in its growth. With advancements in AI technology and increasing commercialization, the potential for AI agents to reshape business operations is limitless, marking the dawn of a new era in AI-powered automation.

The future is clear: AI agents are poised to become the backbone of business ecosystems, transforming industries worldwide and creating a new wave of opportunities for both businesses and consumers alike.
