BEIJING, October 12 (TMTPOST) – China's sales of new energy vehicles hit another record high of 708,000 units in September, up 93.9% year-on-year, according to the data released by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) on Tuesday.

NEVs accounted for  27.1% of all vehicles sold in September, according to CAAM data. 

Among them, pure electric vehicle sales were 539,000 units, up 77.2% year-on-year. Plug-in hybrid vehicle sales were 169,000 units, up 177.5% year-on-year. Fuel cell vehicle sales were 0.02 million units, up 16.8% year-on-year.

In September, Chinese EV maker BYD sold 211,000 new energy vehicles, a record high. Among them, the sales of plug-in hybrid models were 106,000 units, accounting for more than 60% of the sales of similar vehicles in that month. The sales of pure electric models were 95,000 units.

On September 17, Xu Changming, deputy director of the State Information Center, said at the 2022 World Intelligent Connected Vehicles Conference that BYD's plug-in hybrid models have an economic advantage over fuel vehicles while eliminating the mileage anxiety problem of pure electric cars.

In the first nine months of 2022, new energy vehicle sales achieved 4.567 million units, up 110% year-on-year.

Considering the imminent withdrawal of new energy vehicle subsidies at the end of the year and its carryover effects, all parties are optimistic about the expected new energy vehicle sales in the fourth quarter of 2022.

As for overseas markets, 50,000 new energy vehicles were exported in September, down 40.3% from last month and up more than 100% from last year. Tesla's Shanghai plant has a large share of China's new energy vehicle exports. In the first half of 2022, almost one in two new energy vehicles exported from China was a Tesla. In September, the production capacity of Tesla's Shanghai Gigafactory focused on production in China, causing the overall export to decline from last month.
