BEIJING, August 29  (TMTPOST) — China's auto industry is primed to stop selling fuel vehicles, and a "ban on fossile fuel" could be included in the research agenda.

Zhu Huarong, the chairman of Changan Automobile, suggested that authorities should put forward period of prohibitting selling for traditional fuel vehicles and guide enterprises and society as a whole to make an orderly transition to new energy vehicles.

Chen Hong, chairman of SAIC Group, also pointed out that domestic new energy vehicles need further guidance by authorities, and hoped that the specific roadmap and timetable for realizing "carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals" will be landed as soon as possible, which will help enterprises to target their technology routes and subsequent investment planning.

Zhu explained that the proposal to consider banning the sale of fuel vehicles does not mean stopping the sale of all vehicles using internal combustion engines. Plug-in hybrid and hybrid technology routes need to continue to develop. The problem of electric cars' continuation of the journey still exists, and is still prominent in long-distance car scenarios. Pure electric vehicles have limitations in driving range and replenishment energy. While plug-in hybrid and extended range hybrid vehicles do not have range anxiety, and are the replacement of fuel cars in the full range of models.

Zhu added that the future of small cars will be mainly pure electric. Plug-in hybrid and extended range hybrid vehicles will be an important part of medium and large vehicles.

A plug-in hybrid is a model that can use both pure electric and internal combustion engine drive modes. The extended range electric vehicle is considered a type of plug-in hybrid, but there are differences in how they works between these two types of cars. The extended range electric vehicle uses battery power for short distances. When the battery is depleted and cannot be recharged, the internal combustion engine burns oil to generate electricity to continue driving the vehicle.

Data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers show that 674,000 plug-in hybrid vehicles were sold in the first seven months of 2022, up 1.7 times year-on-year. 2.518 million pure electric vehicles were sold in the same period, twice as much as that in the last year.
