BEIJING, April 27 (TMTPOST) — Four employees attempted to take their own lives by jumping off their dorm building within a week at a BYD plant in Changsha, Hunan province, Jiemian reported.
The suicide attempts occured at the plant on April 19, April 25 and April 26 and one worker died on April 25. An employee at BYD told Jiemian that all the four employees joined the company recently. They included three young men and one young woman.
Local law enforcement on Wednesday verified the suicide attempts that occurred on April 25 and April 26. On April 25, the employee jumped off the roof and unfortunately passed away. The police have ruled out the possibility of criminal offenses. The employee who tried to end his life on April 26 was discovered and stopped in time. No further information on the incident on April 19 was disclosed. The police are still investigating the case.
BYD has not commented on the matter. The company cannot comment on the matter now because it needs more details on the cases, according to an insider at BYD.
The company associated with the BYD plant has been involved in a string of legal cases, including 33 labor disputes and another 11 related to business contracts.
Last November, an employee at BYD allegedly died of overworking. On November 5, 2021, a 36-year-old employee was found dead in his rented apartment. The police had ruled out the possibility of murder. The employee’s clock-in and clock-out records show that he had been working for around 12 hours per day for 26 days in October. The employee’s family suspected that he died of overwork.
BYD Co. Ltd. is a publicly-listed Chinese manufacturing company headquartered in Shenzhen, Guangdong, China. The company, founded by Wang Chuanfu in February 1995, has two major subsidiaries, BYD Automobile and BYD Electronic.
