BEIJING, January 11 (TMTPOST) — The IEEE Standards Association has recently published Standard for Technical Framework and Requirements of Trusted Execution Environment based Shared Machine Learning (IEEE Std 2830), which is the world’s first international standard for privacy-preserving machine learning based on a trusted execution environment.

The standard was planned, studied and drafted by a working group of renowned institutions and research organizations, led by Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group’s fintech arm Ant Group.

The standard provides actionable technical standards for privacy computing and releasing data value.

Ant Group, serving as the working group’s chairman unit, initiated the project to set up the international standard. Ant Group worked with Peking University, Zhejiang University, China Electronics Standardization Institute and Zhejiang Lab for two years on studying and drafting the standard. The standard was approved unanimously by IEEE Standards Association’s board in June 2021 and was scheduled to be published later in November.

The standard is based on numerous companies’ experiences in privacy protection and clearly states the requirements for technical frameworks that protect users’ privacy. The standard gives a clear definition of privacy computing and its technical architecture, process, characteristics and security requirements, etc.

Ant Group, together with working group members such as Zhejiang Lab, CloudWalk Technology and Insight Tone, promoted the standard at the 2022 China Internet Industry Annual Conference held on Tuesday.

“The industry’s demand for a standard signifies that privacy computing and its applications are becoming mature,” Peng Jin, deputy general manager of Ant Group’s Technology Strategy Development Department said. “A standard helps the industry reach a consensus on technology stacks, application characteristics, capabilities and security. It will also help the integration of different privacy computing products and the development of a better privacy computing ecosystem.”

IEEE Standards Association is an operating unit within IEEE that develops global standards in a broad range of industries, including power and energy, artificial intelligence systems and internet of things, etc. It is the world’s biggest non-profit professional and technical association.
