Dior said in its announcement that the company has always respected the Chinese people and will be in compliance with relevant laws and regulations in China, vowing that it will follow instructions from relevant authorities on exhibition and will listen to the public's feedback and make adjustments accordingly.

BEIJING, November 23 (TMTPOST) — French luxury fashion brand Dior has publicly apologized on Weibo on Tuesday for a controversial photo exhibited at its LADY DIOR show in Shanghai.

The photography shot by Chinese photographer Chen Man is a close-up portrait that shows a Chinese model with freckled dark skin, gloomy squinted eyes, heavy dark makeup, long artificial nails, and greasy hair holding a Dior bag. The photo not only sparked massive criticism from the public but also drew scrutiny from state-own media outlets such as Beijing Daily. Many believe that the photo deliberately demonizes Asian women through racist lenses.

Dior has apologized on Weibo for the photo, stating that the photo was not a commercial photo from the company but a photography piece from Chen Man that was participating in the exhibition. According to Dior, the brand pays close attention to the criticism it receives and has deleted the photo from Dior’s online and offline sites.

Dior said in its announcement that the company has always respected the Chinese people and will be in compliance with relevant laws and regulations in China, vowing that it will follow instructions from relevant authorities on exhibition and will listen to the public’s feedback and make adjustments accordingly.

The controversial photo’s photographer Chen Man has also apologized for the photo Tuesday. “I was born and raised in China. And I love my motherland deeply,” Chen wrote in her apology, saying that the photo was shot when she was a young artist and that she was inexperienced and lacked an understanding of photography. Chen has also removed the controversial photo from all platforms and promised in her apology that she would continue to learn more and tell China’s stories through good work.

Chen Man is a Chinese visual artist. She has done photography work for fashion magazines and collaborates with major brands across the globe.
