Oppo Restructures Mobile Brands, Pulling OnePlus From Western Markets and Realme From China

The Chinese smartphone giant consolidates its sub-brands to combat rising costs and a global memory chip shortage, winding down OnePlus globally while redirecting Realme.

TMTPOST — The era of the low-cost "flagship killer" smartphone is coming to an end in the West. In a major corporate restructuring, Chinese smartphone manufacturer Oppo has begun winding down its global sub-brands to cope with intense competition and rising supply chain costs.

The company confirmed that OnePlus will immediately cease launching new products in the United States and Europe. This immediate exit represents the first phase of a broader global retreat. According to people with knowledge of the matter, Oppo plans to pull the OnePlus brand from all remaining international markets, including its massive stronghold in India, by 2027. This shift will effectively turn OnePlus into a domestic, China-only brand.

At the same time, Oppo is executing the opposite strategy for its other major sub-brand, Realme. Realme is exiting the Chinese domestic market entirely. Instead, it will focus exclusively on overseas markets, with a particular emphasis on Northern Europe and the Nordic region where the brand has maintained stronger sales momentum.

The drastic moves represent a complete overhaul of Oppo’s multi-brand strategy. They show how difficult it has become for smaller smartphone brands to survive in markets dominated by a few giants.

The Death of the Custom Software Experience

For years, the custom software running on these phones was a major selling point. OnePlus gained a highly loyal global following largely because of OxygenOS, its clean, fast, and light version of Android.

As part of this restructuring, OxygenOS is being discontinued. All future OnePlus devices worldwide will transition to Oppo’s standard software platform, ColorOS. Sibling brand Realme is also phasing out its custom Realme UI software in favor of ColorOS.

Oppo defended the software consolidation as a necessary measure to save money and improve software maintenance. By moving all devices to a single operating system, the company can streamline its software development, run faster update cycles, and pool its engineering resources. Existing customers in the US and Europe will continue to receive software updates and hardware warranty support for their devices, but their systems will transition to ColorOS during the next major Android update.

The Squeeze on Low-Cost Hardware

The immediate trigger for the restructuring is a combination of falling sales and surging manufacturing costs.

OnePlus originally built its reputation by offering high-end specifications at prices far below those of Apple and Samsung. However, that business model depended on cheap, readily available components. Over the past year, a global shortage of memory chips has driven component prices up sharply. This spike occurred because semiconductor manufacturers redirected their production capacity toward high-margin AI data center chips.

The resulting price increases made it nearly impossible for OnePlus to profitably manufacture its budget-friendly Nord lineup, which had been its primary sales driver in markets like India.

At the same time, the broader smartphone market has slowed. In China, handset shipments fell 4.3% in the second quarter compared to the previous year, according to data from IDC. While Oppo has maintained a strong position in its home market, rising component costs have eroded its profit margins.

Retail Channels and Legal Pressures

Beyond component costs, Oppo has struggled to gain traction in Western markets against entrenched competitors. In the United States, Apple and Samsung hold an absolute stranglehold on retail channels and carrier partnerships. This left OnePlus trailing far behind smaller competitors like Motorola and Google.

Legal and political pressures have also complicated Oppo's international business. The company faces persistent geopolitical concerns related to selling Chinese telecommunications hardware in Western markets. Additionally, an ongoing trade-secret lawsuit from Apple has increased the legal risks and costs of operating in the US.

By retreating to China and consolidating its software, Oppo is choosing a path of financial defense. The company will focus its primary brand on China and Central Europe, while using Realme as a lean vehicle for specific European niches like the Nordic region.

For consumers, the retreat represents a significant loss of choice in the mid-range smartphone market. The exit of OnePlus from Western retail shelves marks the end of an era where independent, enthusiast-focused brands could realistically challenge the industry's largest players.
