Investment guru Jim Rogers shared his investment philosophy with TMTPost founder and CEO Zhao Hejuan.

BEIJING, December 13 (TMTPOST) – Investment guru Jim Rogers has advised investors to buy a property in the countryside if they want to buy it in China.

He offered such a practical tip in his dialogue with TMTPost Group’s founder and CEO Zhao Hejuan during her live talk show “He Why.”

“If you want to buy a property in China, Ms Zhao, go to the countryside. Beijing is trying to make the countryside more successful and more prosperous,” said Rogers, who co-founded Quantum Fund with George Solos. “You know how to drive a tractor? I know you don't know how to drive a tractor. You should learn to drive a tractor. You should go if you want to. If I were going to buy a property in China, I would buy it in the countryside, not in the in the booming cities.”

He is widely known for his firm belief in the rise of China. He retierated during the 2021 T-EDGE Conference that he was upbeat about the future of China because he knew Chinese history.

China is “the only country in world history” that has been great three or four times. “When China rises to the top and then falls after a few decades or a few centuries, China rises to the top again. Ms Zhao, no other country in the world has ever been able to do that. Great Britain was great once. Rome was great once. Egypt was great once."

"I don't know why. Maybe it's because of the women. Maybe it's because of you. I don't know why China has been great three or four time but I know it's happening again,” Rogers said, adding that he was extremely impressed by the story of TMTPost Group, which He founded in 2012.

He recalled his fear prior to his first visit to China. “I was terrified. I have been reading American propaganda all my life that the Chinese were dangerous, ambitious and bloodthirsty evil people,” he said. 

“I got there. I found out the Chinese were educated, hard working, disciplined, ambitious. Wait a minute. This is not a dangerous country. This is going to be a very great successful country. And as I rode around China more and more, I saw what was happening. I continue to see what's happening. So that is why I am optimistic about China,” he told Zhao about a change of his views following the first visit and many more visits to the country, which is the world’s second largest economy now.

He downplayed the problems China will face by comparing the difficulties China may face to those the United States has gone through. “America became the most successful country in the 20th century. We had a lot of problems along the way. Everybody who rises, whether an individual or a family or a company or a country, nothing goes straight up... So I see what's happening in China. I'm sure you'll make mistakes. Everybody makes some mistakes,” he said.

“But I'm teaching my children Mandarin, and I'm teaching my children about Asia, because of what's happening in China. And when there are problems, remember the Mandarin word 危机. You know 危机 is also the opportunity and disaster. It's the same thing,” he said.

Rogers revealed that he held Chinese stocks out of his optimistic view of China. “I hope that I find more Chinese investments. Especially when they have problems, I would like to invest more. China's great. You know if you have sold American stocks 100 years ago, it would've been a mistake. That's my view of China. My children, I hope, will have a lot of Chinese shares someday. And it will make them very happy,” he said clearly.

The renowned investor also said he held some wine stocks because people stopped going out because of the pandemic.

Rogers lives in Singapore with his wife and two daughters after moving away from the United States. He just wanted to get closer to the future center of the world economy.
