BEIJING, September 30 (TMTPOST) – Chinese Internet giant Tencent’s social media app WeChat announced on Thursday that its payment service is connecting with UnionPay’s QuickPass in payment and other services. WeChat Pay and QuickPass’s mobile app now support the same QR code system, allowing QuickPass users to scan WeChat Pay payment QR code for transactions in China.

UnionPay is a Chinese financial services corporation headquartered in Shanghai, China. It provides bank card services and a major card scheme in mainland China. Its QuickPass service adopts NFC and Token technologies, which enable offline contactless payment via mobile devices, and support QR code-based and in-app payments, making payment safer and easier.
China’s e-commerce giant Alibaba also announced a few days ago that its takeout app Eleme, video platform Youku and online ticketing service Damai, etc. have adopted WeChat Pay as a payment method.
This means that WeChat Pay, Alipay, and UnionPay QuickPass, the top three payment service providers in China in terms of market share, are gradually connecting to each other.
WeChat Pay and UnionPay QuickPass are working together to have better integration with each other in payment and other services to drive the development of the payment service industry, WeChat says in an official statement.
UnionPay QuickPass’s mobile app now supports the recharge of Q coins on QQ music and Tencent Video. WeChat’s mini apps are starting to support payment via QuickPass as well, including WeChat Read, Tencent Video, Maoyan, JD and Luckin Coffee, etc.
WeChat stated that WeChat Pay and UnionPay QuickPass have been exploring potential cooperation opportunities for a long time. The further integration this time will lay the foundation for better connectivity in the future, WeChat said. According to the company, WeChat Pay will continue to explore cooperation opportunities in payment use scenes while making sure users can enjoy convenient and secured payment services.
