On May 20th, the so-called “I Love You Day” in Chinese pronunciation, TMTPost teamed up with The New York Times and co-hosted the 2016 T-EDGE VR Summit, during which more than twenty Chinese and American VR A-listers shared not only in-depth understandings and amazing experience, but also tremendous valuable information with more than one thousand people in the audience.
Besides the insightful speech of leading Chinese and American innovators and the amazing VR experience at the summit, there was also an anecdote: Zhao Jejuan, founder of TMTpost, made a bet with Li Huaiyi, co-founder and CEO of Whaley Technology. What’s the bet exactly, then?
It is known that VR gadgets are still not widespread in China and “dizziness” remains one of the major obstacles for Chinese VR developers. In Mr. Li’s speech on VR film, TV series and entertainment, he also mentioned “dizziness”, saying that: “The most important goal for VR developers is to avoid causing dizziness to users”
As a matter of fact, poor user experience has always been the major reason why VR gadgets fail to spread to the general public. On the one hand, VR gadgets usually have high standards on resolution and FPS, so problems such as slur, streak and lag phase may often occur when the angle of the image and camera and that of the user fail to match; on the other hand, users might feel dizziness more easily when they can’t focus on specific objects in the VR world and when they are overwhelmed with the imbalance between the real world and the VR world, since there is usually a lack of the depth of field in the VR world.
In addition, users might have a bad experience because the bandwidth and transfer speed can’t meet the requirement for live video broadcasting via VR gadgets.
In the speech, Mr. Li announced that the China VS Trinidad and Tobago football game to be held on June, 3rd would be live broadcasted via VR technologies and Whaley Technology would be the tech support for the VR live video broadcasting.
So will football fans feel dizziness when using Whaley’s all-in-one product to watch the game?
“By reducing delays in all related processes: from recording to outputting, etc., Whaley Technology made several bold attempts to improve user experience when watching entertainment programs and sports events,” Mr. Li seemed to be quite confident in their products.
To avoid dizziness, Whaley Technology also carried out its own VR camera and developed “Octahedron technology” to address the video transfer problem.
But can these technologies really work?
Zhao Hejuan, founder of TMTpost, doubted it, so she made a bet with Mr. Li:
As long as there is a user who feel dizziness when using Whaley’s all-in-one VR product, every audience of 2016 T-EDGE VR Summit will receive a Whaley’s all-in-one VR product for free, which is priced at around RMB 1,000 (around $152).
“What a bet! The stakes are so huge!” Mr. Li said, laughingly.
The following is the transcript of Ms. Zhao Hejua and Mr. Li Huaiyu’s conversation:
Zhao Hejuan: Resolution and dizziness remain two of the major obstacles for VR gadget developers. Have you solved the problem?
Li Huaiyu: Yep, we solved the problem from three aspects: first of all, we doubled the resolution of head display compared to common standards; secondly, we improved the algorithm and reduced the video delay time to less than 20 microseconds; thirdly, we developed the “Octahedron technology” and lowered the requirement for bandwidth.
Zhao Hejuan: Can you guarantee that users won’t feel dizziness when watching football games with Whaley’s all-in-one VR product?
Li Huaiyu: I am confident in our product, since we did our best to avoid video delay and dizziness, match our software and hardware seamlessly in the R&D process, so that we can always give users with the best user experience.
Zhao Hejuan: I shall user Whaley’s VR product to watch the football game on June, 3rd myself. What if I could still feel dizziness?
Li Huaiyu: We can make a bet.
Zhao Hejuan: If you say so, I will definitely go to watch the game. As long as I feel dizziness when using Whaley’s all-in-one VR product, every audience today will receive a Whaley’s all-in-one VR product for free.
Li Huaiyu: Deal!
Can Whaley’s VR products effectively avoid dizziness? Will TMTpost’s founder feel dizziness on June, 3rd? Who’s to win the bet? Let’s wait and see.
